About GPS

Many adults today associate the phrase “GPS” with a device that helps people find their location in the world. This is also true of our therapy work. We help people get oriented in their lives—especially in their relationships.

It’s important to note that “relationship” doesn’t only describe an interaction between two people. A relationship is any connection or association between people, groups, or entities. In this sense, everything is connected in relationship: us and the people around us; us and the air we breathe; us and the spiritual space where we seek God; even us and our own conscious sense of self and life direction. We have some kind of relationship with everything we encounter.

Our work helps people define and improve these relationships, much like a GPS helps us understand where we are and where we’re going. Our services meet a real and urgent need, as those who come to us are often struggling with some form of disorientation. Their internal maps may not be working—or may have been completely erased. Through therapy, we help people heal and grow. We support them in rebuilding a life map, a new sense of orientation, and help them find the best path forward.

Understanding where we are in our relationships is key to healing and growth. It’s an honest process. When the map is true, we can make real choices, anchor ourselves in helpful relationships, and move forward on a meaningful journey.

We also like to say that GPS can stand for God, People, and Self.

God represents a spiritual relationship, whether defined clearly or felt as something more mysterious. It may include our connection to a higher power, to the divine, or even to the events and circumstances in the world that feel beyond our understanding or control. Many people need help orienting—or re-orienting—in this relationship, finding meaning, comfort, and peace in the process.

People refers to exactly that: people. This includes those we’re closely connected to, and others more distantly present in our lives. Other people offer us opportunities for connection, hope, and purpose. But they can also be sources of pain, conflict, grief, and disorientation. Whether it’s the result of loss, strained family dynamics, or broken relationships, we often need help navigating the people in our lives.

Self refers to our internal world. Many clients who see us are struggling with mental and emotional challenges rooted in their own experience—things like anxiety, depression, addictions, grief, shame, fear of the future, or regret about the past. These internal struggles often require healing and re-orientation. We all have a relationship with our thoughts, history, beliefs, and expectations—and many of those may need to be examined and reshaped for our own well-being and for the good of those we love. We help people be honest with themselves—about themselves.
