Note from Chris: Both/and

Friends!

The holidays are a coming. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Black Friday, Days off, all the TV specials and internet sites reviewing the best and worst of 2024... its here. Yay.

Some of us experience loss and grief during holidays, some of us not. Some of us experience meaningful life giving family interactions during the holidays, some of us not. Some of us experience a spiritual renewal during the holidays and some, don't. Some of us review the year past and set productive goals for the next year, and some of us watch more TV and youtube. Some of us give great gifts, some receive great gifts, some do not. Some experience fullness, some a devastating void, and some both.

My encouragement to each of us during this time is to be "both/ and" kinds of people. This means:

  • Acknowledge the struggles of the holidays, the losses, and things that can be difficult and overwhelming.

  • Tell the truth to yourself and those you love about whats tough.

  • Grief is just the acknowledgement of loss.

  • Be real.

And..... also (both/ and) give energy to the things in life you are thankful for.

  • Say them out loud.

  • Remind and be reminded of relationships, history, faith and God's provision.

  • Do both/ and.

Why? Because it’s true.

Do your best to align with anyone who can be helpful as you acknowledge loss or difficulty. A therapist, a trusted friend or family member, prayer to God, are all candidates here. Also, do your best to remember what is good in your life.

  • Exercise gratitude (the first holiday of the holy trinity of holidayism is Thanksgiving afterall). Do this collectively.

  • State the obvious good thing.

  • Remind yourself and each other what orients you, what orients us during this time of year.

Be both/ and.

The big picture: This is what honest people do, and what allows people to help each other heal and grow.

Our mission at CKCS is to provide healing and growth through relational mental health therapy. Lets be honest bringers of healing and growth for ourselves and our people during this time.

We love you guys and are so thankful for your support and patronage.

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.
